After the living room, the kitchen is where you spend most of your time with your friends and family. That’s often why kitchen remodels are one of the most common home renovations. They’re also one of the most rewarding.
But kitchen remodels aren’t necessarily easy, nor are they easy to live with between demolition and the final touches. To help you out, we’ve put together a few tips to help you survive your own kitchen remodel.
PROTECT WHAT YOU DON’T WANT DEMOLISHED
Kitchen renovations aren’t always major. You may love your cabinets but hate the countertops. Or you may want to replace both the countertops and the appliances.
If you’re not scrapping the entire kitchen and putting in new floors, new appliances, new countertops, and new cabinets, it’s crucial to protect the things you’re keeping.
You can start by protecting your floors with protection boards
that work like heavy-duty elbow pads for your hardwood or tile. If you don’t trust cardboard to protect your countertops, you can use paperboard to protect them as well.
Try to keep the demolition contained. Flying cabinet debris can nick your flooring or appliances if left exposed.
CREATE A SEPARATE, TEMPORARY KITCHEN
You need a kitchen during the time that you’re renovating. If you have the tools, consider creating a temporary kitchen elsewhere in your home.
You can do this using a table in your living room and setting up your microwave and a mini-fridge. Small, compact toaster ovens also make for a great oven replacement when you don’t have access to a full-size one.
INVEST IN DISPOSABLE PLATES AND UTENSILS
You may want to save some extra money during your renovation by using your own plates and utensils, but you won’t want to do your dishes in your bathroom sink or tub.
That said, invest in paper plates and disposable utensils for the time being. Not only will they save you money on your water bill (a tub faucet lets out a lot of water compared to a sink), but they’ll also save you the stress of dishes building up in your bathroom.
LOOKING FOR BOARDS TO PROTECT YOUR FLOORS?
Floor protection boards are crucial during any renovation, whether your floors are hardwood or covered in soft carpeting. For instance, a single square yard of carpet can hold up to one pound of dirt and your remodel job will involve a lot of dust and debris.
