The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's "Renovate Right":
Common renovation activities that disturb lead-based paint, like sanding, cutting, and demolition, can create hazardous lead dust and chips that can be harmful to adults and children.
To protect against exposure risk, EPA has finalized the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (40 CFR 745). This rule requires the use of lead-safe work practices during renovations in pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities.
Contractors performing work that distributes lead-based paint in buildings must:
-Be EPA certified, and
-Follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination

To learn more about working safely with lead, contact the National Lead Information Center at 1-800-424-LEAD (5323) or visit EPA's website at www.epa.gov/lead.
